Program: Teacher Licensure portfolio at Western Governors University
Program description: WGU’s portfolio of teacher licensure programs provides pathways to licensure in elementary education, special education, and secondary education in all 50 states. The curriculum integrates research-based concepts from the learning sciences. Clinical practice opportunities start with embedded virtual simulations and progress into in-person classroom experiences. These hands-on experiences, coupled with advanced coursework, ensure that students are well-prepared to make a difference in today’s diverse classrooms. Teachers College is accredited at the initial-licensure level by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP).
Modality: Hybrid; students complete coursework online and get in-classroom experience in a Student Teaching component hosted by an experienced teacher and directed by a clinical supervisor.
My role on the project: As the Senior Lead Educational Product Designer, I led a cross-functional design team to determine the program curriculum, courses, assessments, technology tools, learning design strategies, and alignment with licensure standards.
Impact: WGU is the largest conferrer of bachelor’s degrees in education in the U.S. and graduates over 5,000 classroom prepared teachers annually, helping to address the nationwide teacher shortage.
